Ryan Day’s big quarterback decision has put the writing on the wall for one Ohio State player

It was already thought to be the case for the 2024 college football season, but it became official on Thursday for Ohio State. Will Howard was named the start for the 2024 season and will have one year as the starter with the Buckeyes after transferring over from Kansas State.

It was a two-man race in the end for the starting quarterback job between Howard and junior Devin Brown. Brown is the only quarterback on the roster with prior experience in Columbus, so it may sting for him a bit that he isn’t the guy for that alone.

After the decision made by Ryan Day, it is fair to wonder what is next for Brown. This felt like the best year for Brown to take the job and that didn’t happen, though Day admitted on Thursday that he thought the job was his last year.

“This time last year I thought Devin was gonna be the starter,” Day said. “Then Kyle [McCord] came along in the end.”

Now, the wonder is if Brown will even be around next year. Obviously, this year has to play out first and injuries are a real thing. The backup quarterback has had to step up before in Columbus and could need to again, you never know. On the other hand, the transfer portal is bigger than ever and it is a real possibility that we see Brown enter it following the season.

Heading into his senior season, you would have to think that Brown will want a chance to be a starting quarterback while in college. If that can’t happen at Ohio State, it can happen somewhere else. Freshman Julian Sayin is still in competition with Brown for the backup job and Day said that job isn’t solidified yet heading into the season.

Ohio State has two former five-star recruits in Sayin and Air Noland that will ideally be competing for the job next season with 2025 verbal commit and five-star Tavien St. Clair. It would be no surprise if a guy like Brown and Lincoln Kienholz aren’t on the Ohio State roster next year.

When it comes to where Brown needs to improve, Day addressed that on Thursday.

“Devin has shown the ability to do everything we have asked him to do,” Day said. “It is the consistency part and taking care of the football part that he’s just got to make sure that he does a great job of moving forward. If he can do that, then he can play and be a contributor for us.”

This is not the end of the road for Brown at Ohio State but his future has become a lot more cloudy by not winning the starting job. For now, he will need to buy into the backup role.
