Everyone who has watched a Michigan Wolverines football game in the last couple years knows that Will Johnson is a special talent at cornerback. But one thing many fans don't realize is that he wasn't even playing at full strength for his 2023 All-American season performance.

When this was brought up to Sherrone Moore this week during media availability he said, "Which is crazy, because I would have never thought that." Joel Sebastianelli of BCSN's post shared much of this full quote on just how special Will Johnson truly is (as you can see below).

"I haven't been around many corners that are as violent in the run game and as violent in the pass game. The dude was coming off the edge the other day and playing contain, doing things, and it felt like a linebacker doing it. And for a corner to do that it's very, very rare...Obviously elite talent level. Elite person. But the toughness, the leadership skills, all that. It's just unmatchable. And that's why he's the best corner in the country."

Will Johnson, Best Cornerback in the Country

Sherrone Moore said exactly what we all know to be true about Will Johnson. He's the best cornerback in the nation. There may be others "close" to him, but most who study the game understand he's simply the best. That's all there is to it. Seven interceptions in his first two seasons. Incredible in run defense and every facet of coverage. The definition of elite.

Ryan Wilson, an analyst for CBS Sports, doesn't go as far to say that Will Johnson will be the first overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, but he's certainly the number one overall on his big board at the moment. And he has some pretty lofty comps for Johnson as you can see in his post below.

Johnson's elite skills will be leaned on heavily as Michigan looks to replace three starters in their secondary this season. He'll likely be tasked with completely shutting down one half of the field by himself yet again as the less experienced players hope to hold things together opposite Johnson.

If opposing teams decide to try and exploit the non-Johnson matchups all year long we may see a season without as many passes defended from him, but he should still be the first cornerback taken off the 2025 NFL Draft board next spring.
