Russell Wilson's path to starting QB may be in serious jeopardy following his Steelers debut

The Pittsburgh Steelers had a rough night on Saturday, closing out their preseason home fixtures with an absolute dud.

An offense that looked lifeless for much of the night, the Buffalo Bills won the game and scored a mere nine points.

And while it may only be preseason, the games provide a potential preview of what's to come, and offensively, it's not a pretty one for Pittsburgh, as through two games, neither starting offense has scored.

That means changes might have to occur to the starting lineup, with these three players being potential candidates.

QB Russell Wilson

Wilson was completely unremarkable in his Steelers debut. He had a fantastic completion percentage of 80% going 8/10 on his attempts, but they added up a grand total of 47 yards with no TDs, no interceptions, and only one completion for a first down.

Wilson also took three sacks and lost 21 yards of which at least one was his fault.

It would be wrong to grade his debut in its entirety without analyzing the film, but the offense was lifeless under his command.

And while things weren't much better when Justin Fields took over, what immediately changed was the ability to keep a drive alive.

Not only did Fields lead the team in passing (albeit against backups) he also led the team in rushing and repeatedly improvised and made something out of nothing.

The regular season kicks off exactly three weeks from Sunday, with one preseason game. So nothing is etched in stone, but should Wilson have another performance like Saturday night, it's hard to envision him starting Week 1,

OT Broderick Jones

It was certainly a night to forget for Jones, who started things off by letting up a sack against Bills pass rusher Greg Rosseau, which he then mirrored on the third drive.

Jones has been nursing an elbow injury and playing both sides of the line with rookie Troy Fautanu out with his knee injury.

Asking a player who came out of college "raw" in his footwork to swap back and forth on sides with entirely different footwork is a recipe for disaster, and that recipe showed itself on Saturday night.

With Fautanu slated to make his return in the regular season opener and Dan Moore still holding firm at LT, what seemed crazy a few weeks ago, could be a reality when it comes to a starting tackle duo for Moore Jr. and Fautanu.

LB Tyler Matakevich

Matakevich was no look to make the roster, but after Mark Robinson had a strong showing and Dirty Red put up a donut in the box score (outside of special teams), he's going to need a huge Week 3 to overtake Robinson and win the final spot in the LB corps.
