Underrated piece generates big defensive play for the Packers despite tough night in Denver

You might not have heard his name much, but Arron Mosby had a solid performance for the Green Bay Packers against the Denver Broncos in the second week of preseason.

For the most part, it was a tough night for Green Bay, with Denver's starters initially playing against the Packers' backups — the talent discrepancy was evident from the get go.

In the third quarter, though, the Packers defense was able to get a positive sequence. Broncos backup quarterback Jarrett Stidham had completed a long pass, but it came back because edge defender Arron Mosby forced a penalty from the offensive line.

On the very next play, Mosby pressured Stidham once again. The ball was tipped at the line by undrafted rookie defensive lineman James Ester, and off-ball linebacker Kristian Welch got the interception.

The Packers return to the field next Saturday, at 12pm (CT), to finish up the preseason against the Baltimore Ravens at Lambeau Field. It will be the last opportunity for some players to show their value, trying to make the 53-man roster or at least the practice squad. And Mosby is a part of that battle.

    Background

Undrafted out of Fresno State, Arron Mosby spent his rookie season with the Carolina Panthers in 2022. After being cut by the Panthers during training camp last year, Mosby was claimed off waivers by the Packers.

He didn't make the initial 53-man roster in 2023, but spent the entire season on the practice squad — which is probably the most likely scenario for him again in 2024. And the good performance in preseason games is certainly helpful, since the Packers have 10 edge rushers on the 90-man roster , and the competition for roster spots is huge.

Rashan Gary, Preston Smith, Lukas Van Ness, and Kingsley Enagbare are roster locks. Beyond them, there is an open competition — even though Brenton Cox is favored to be the fifth edge if they decide to keep five.
