Miami Dolphins make quick signing after injury update to preseason standout

The Miami Dolphins didn't waste any time on Monday to address a sudden roster shortcoming ahead of their third and final preseason game.

The Dolphins have reportedly signed free agent running back Anthony McFarland, Jr., per NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.

The move is a logical one for the Dolphins, given how their second preseason game ended.  Chris Brooks suffered an injury and had to leave just one play after breaking off a game-high 59-yard run in the second half.  Mike McDaniel advised on Monday morning that Brooks is in concussion protocol . Unfortunate, given how Brooks has been making a strong case for a roster spot.

With Brooks sidelined the Dolphins had to finish out the game with just one running back: Je'Quan Burton.  Burton carried three times for one yard.

McFarland, Jr. was a fourth-round draft pick of the Steelers in the 2020 NFL Draft.  He appeared in 17 games over four seasons, totaling 146 yards rushing on 42 carries with 11 catches for 87 yards.

McFarland, Jr. is very likely just a player the Dolphins will be able to use in their final preseason game against the Buccaneers along with Burton.  Perhaps they're taking a look at him for their practice squad as well.  The same case could be made for LB Dequan Jackson, who the Dolphins are also reportedly signing on Monday .

In any event, Dolphins fans will likely see a decent bit of McFarland, Jr. on Friday night against the Buccaneers, although beyond that seems quite unlikely.
