We are heading into unfamiliar waters when it comes to the college football season. This season, there will be 12 teams taking part in the College Football Playoff, eight more teams than what we are accustomed to.

For Ohio State, the expectations are high as ever and a winner is expected to be in Columbus this fall. The Buckeyes returned a lot of talent and had an exciting offseason to warrant it.

In 2024, two things stand out for what the goals should be for Ryan Day’s program.

Beating Michigan has to happen and help reach goal No. 2

Winning against Michigan is not a must anymore to reach the National Championship if Ohio State can take care of business with the rest of their schedule. Games against Oregon and Penn State are both on the road, so nothing is given there. Still, it has been three straight seasons that the Buckeyes have lost to Michigan and they badly need to shift that.

Michigan should take a step back this season after losing much of its coaching staff and a lot of seniors from last year’s team that won it all. Day’s ability to take care of Michigan has been alarming and it has had Ohio State fans loud all offseason. If there is one thing that has to happen in Columbus, you have to beat the rival.

If the Buckeyes go on to win a National Championship after losing to Michigan, all would be final at the end of this season. But if the Buckeyes don’t take care of Michigan and don’t win it all, that’s a bad time for this current staff.

    Compete for a National Championship

Year in and year out the Buckeyes are expected to win it all. They spend the money in NIL to do it and they recruit at the level that you’d need to win it all. With all of the players returning plays and transfer portal additions of Quinshon Judkins, Will Howard , and Caleb Downs, the expectations are as high as ever.

Teams could be playing as many as 17 games this season and that is more than we have ever seen on the college landscape. Depth is going to be tested in a big way and that is where a program like Ohio State bodes well. The Buckeyes have to make a real run at winning it all this season and having the expectation that they should win it is fair.
