Los Angeles Chargers' recent free agent signing just costed a young player his job with the team

Even with Justin Herbert on the shelf, the Los Angeles Chargers are cutting ties with a quarterback. They signed Luis Perez prior to their second preseason game, and now, he's one of just two healthy QBs on the Chargers roster.

    Chargers release QB Max Duggan

Duggan did not play in the team's latest preseason game.

Only Luis Perez and Easton Stick played against the Los Angeles Rams. Perez got a bulk of the snaps, completing 13 of 20 attempts for 78 passing yards. Stick went 8/13 with an interception and 22 yards on the ground.

Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh called it “a coach’s decision” to go with Luis Perez over Duggan last weekend against the Rams.

The addition of Perez has seemingly pushed Duggan's time with the team to an end. It will be intriguing to see if he can jump onto another team's roster to finish the preseason or begin the regular season.

The move by Los Angeles also points to some confidence that Justin Herbert can return by the start of the season. It would be difficult to see them only taking those two quarterbacks into Week 1 of 2024. Hopefully, Herbert will be 100% by then.

Herbert practices for the first time since August 1st

The Chargers starting QB took practice reps on the field for the first time in nearly three weeks. He is dealing with a foot injury that has kept him out of preseason play as well as practice.

That is a good step forward for Los Angeles' star QB.
