Former Ryan Poles draft pick headlines three surprise cuts the Bears could make after the preseason finale

The Chicago Bears are going to have to make some tough roster decisions over the next few days leading up to the official cut down day on August 27th.

Unfortunately, not everyone is able to make it on the final roster and the team will have one more preseason game remaining to determine who gets the final spots.

That means some surprise cuts are going to have to be made in order for the team to create the 53-man roster going into the 2024 season. Here are three surprise players that have a high probability of getting cut going into the preseason finale.

    LB Noah Sewell

Everyone's been expecting an eventual breakout out of the Bears' former fifth-round selection in the 2023 NFL Draft. Instead, injuries could cause the second-year linebacker to not even make through the final roster cuts.

Sewell appeared in 13 games during his rookie season, mainly as a special teams contributor and nothing more. Which makes sense considering he played behind Tremaine Edmunds, T.J. Edwards and Jack Sanborn.

This offseason, the Bears brought in some depth at the position in players such as Amen Ogbongbemiga, Javin White, and undrafted rookie Paul Moala. Not to mention Micah Baskerville, who appeared in two games as a rookie for the Bears in 2023.

Sewell's biggest downfall has been a knee injury that's caused him to miss significant time in camp and held him out of all three preseason games thus far. The clock is starting to tick for the young defender and if he can't make it on the field, he could be looking for a new home after cuts. Unless he comes back on the practice squad.

    OT Larry Borom

Following the activation of third-round rookie offensive tackle Kiran Amegadjie , the warning lights are on for fourth-year swing tackle Larry Borom.

It's hard to imagine a backup offensive lineman who's started 23 games in his short career being listed as a cut candidate, but it's certainly possible in Borom's case.

If Amegadjie is truly healthy enough to be on the field, the recent third-round pick gets some roster priority over a player general manager Ryan Poles didn't even select. That's not even factoring in Borom's $3+ million roster bonus he earned for the 2024 season based on his play time over the last three years. Keep an eye on the Bears floating Borom's name around as a potential trade piece over the next few days.

    DE Jacob Martin

Free agent pickup Jacob Martin is another player who had his training camp experience ruined thus far due to injury. Martin has missed all of the team's preseason games while players such as Daniel Hardy, Austin Booker, and Byron Cowart continued to shine on the defensive line.

After drawing high praise from his coaches and players during the early portion of the offseason, Martin is now in danger of losing his job due to his availability.

The Bears front office being openly involved in adding another veteran pass rusher doesn't bode well for his chances of making the team either. Martin was once again seen with the injured players off to the side during Monday's practice with a short week until the team's final preseason game. If he can't suit up on Thursday, the veteran addition might end up somewhere else this season.
