Former Tennessee Vols defender set to be part of unique game on college football's opening weekend

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and the Florida State Seminoles will travel to Ireland this weekend to play in the Aer Lingus College Football Classic in Dublin.

And there will be a former Tennessee Vols defender on the field for the action.

Former Vols cornerback Warren Burrell will suit up for the Yellow Jackets on Saturday after transferring to Georgia Tech earlier this offseason.

Burrell, who is from the Atlanta area, spent the first five years of his career at Tennessee before leaving Knoxville this past offseason.

"It's exciting,” said Burrell earlier this month when asked about playing in Ireland. “When I was first hearing about it, I was confused because I didn't think there were too many football fans out there. I guess that's just my own thoughts. But it's crazy to see that the game's sold out so it's going to be a big prime time game.

"Either way we're playing Florida State. That's a good team. But just being able to go and have that experience across the world and do something like that. It's really cool. It's something you tell your kids about. So I plan to take full advantage and do everything I can to help us get a dub."

This will be the ninth NCAA sanctioned college football game that's been played in Ireland. The first game was played in 1988 between Boston College and Army.

Iowa State and Kansas State are set to play in Ireland in 2025.
