Crazy play during joint practice shows what Aaron Rodgers can still do for the Jets in 2024

Aaron Rodgers might not be that 2011 or 2014 version of himself, but his arm talent, strength, and accuracy to throw the football are still impressive — particularly for a 40-year-old player . During the joint practice with the New York Giants, the Jets quarterback had an amazing highlight play.

Like in the old days, Rodgers stood in the pocket and threw a bomb down the field. Wide receiver Garrett Wilson easily beat Giants cornerback Nick McCloud for a 55-yard touchdown.

Why it matters

That entire play is exactly what Jets fans hope their offense can be in 2024. Aaron Rodgers showed he can still execute awesome throws, Garrett Wilson showed how dominant he can be — especially with solid quarterback play —, and left tackle Tyron Smith dominated Brian Burns, giving Rodgers enough time for the play to develop.

Overall, the Jets were better than the Giants on both sides of the ball in Wednesday's joint practice. Combining full field, redzone, and two-minute periods, Aaron Rodgers completed 15 of 21 passes for four touchdowns and a sack. The touchdown receptions came from running back Breece Hall, two from wide receiver Garrett Wilson, and a last one to receiver Allen Lazard.

After the activity, it was possible to feel how the entire team trusts Aaron Rodgers can turn the offense around.

"He's got a few more years in the league," cornerback Sauce Gardner said. "He's the best quarterback I've ever seen and I'm not saying that because he's on my team."

Last season, the Jets had the worst quarterback situation in the NFL with a combination of Zach Wilson, Tim Boyle, and Trevor Siemian. Aaron Rodgers doesn't need to be what he was in his prime to make them materially better, and plays like that throw to Garrett Wilson show exactly how high the ceiling of the Jets' offense can be.
