Michigan Wolverines name four team captains, two alternatives for the 2024 season

The Michigan Wolverines have named four team captains ahead of their 2024 football season. Senior running back Donovan Edwards, senior tight end/fullback Max Bredeson, senior safety Rod Moore, and graduate safety Makari Paige were all selected by their teammates to lead their team.

Additionally, the team named two alternative captains: senior running back Kalel Mullings and senior edge rusher Josaiah Stewart.

It's no surprise that every team captain was a senior. In Sherrone Moore's first season as the head coach of the Wolverines, he'll depend on that veteran leadership to guide the team in his first season.

Running back Donovan Edwards was a key cog in Michigan's national championship run last season. Forming an elite 1-2 punch with former Wolverine Blake Corum (third-round pick of the Los Angeles Rams), Edwards rushed 119 times for 497 yards and 5 touchdowns, adding 30 catches for 249 yards last season.

Fellow running back Kalel Mullings was also named an alternative team captain. Mullings, likely to be the RB2 for the Wolverines in 2024, had 36 carries for 222 yards, a touchdown, and two catches for 32 yards last season.

Max Bredeson, the brother of former Wolverines two-time captain offensive lineman Ben Bredeson (now on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers), is an underrated player on the Wolverines due to his versatility. The tight end/fullback/H-back is one of the best blockers on Michigan's roster and his penchant for doing the dirty work makes his captainship well-deserved.

Alternative captain edge rusher Josaiah Stewart should be another key player for the Wolverines' stout defense this season. A talented pass rusher, Stewart logged 29 pressures, six sacks, and a batted pass last season. He and fellow pass rusher Derrick Moore will be counted on to replace Jaylen Harrell and Braiden McGregor.

Safety Rod Moore was a Third-Team All-Big Ten selection last season. Moore logged 38 tackles, two interceptions, and five PBU's last season. Unfortunately, Moore's 2024 season is marred by a torn ACL he suffered in spring practice.

Fellow team captain safety Makari Paige is ready to help fill in the void left behind by Moore's injury. Paige has been a reliable mainstay for the Wolverines the past two seasons. Paige started every game last season for Michigan, racking up 28 tackles and one PBU.
