Arizona Cardinals will be down a weapon for the first five games of the 2024 season

Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Zay Jones has been suspended for the first five games of the season for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy.

The suspension stems from a domestic battery arrest that occurred last November while Jones played for the Jacksonville Jaguars. The charges were later dropped, but that doesn't exempt him from being suspended by the league.

Jones will not be able to be at the team facility or practice until Arizona plays the Green Bay Packers in Week 6. The Cardinals signed Jones to a one-year, $4.25 million contract during the offseason to provide some veteran depth to their wide receiver corps.

Originally a second-round pick by the Buffalo Bills, Jones is entering his ninth NFL season with his fourth team. He's looking to have a bounce-back year after a disappointing 2023 season in which he caught 34 passes for 321 yards and two touchdowns in nine games.

While losing Jones isn't ideal, it shouldn't exactly devastate the Cardinals' offense. Rookie receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. will be the centerpiece of the passing game, with Michael Wilson and Greg Dortch as complimentary pieces. Also at Arizona's disposal is Trey McBride, who could establish himself as one of the best tight ends in the league this season.

Getting Jones back in the middle of the season will be a nice boost for the Cardinals' offense. He is a big target at 6-foot-2 and is just two years removed from setting career-highs in receptions with 82 and yards with 823. If he can find that form again, Arizona could quietly have one of the better passing offenses in the NFL by season's end.
