The Las Vegas Raiders' 2024 preseason was marked by a competitive atmosphere and several notable performances, despite concluding with a record of 0-2-1, which includes a tie in their final game against the San Francisco 49ers.

The preseason spotlighted the quarterback battle between Gardner Minshew and Aidan O'Connell, with Minshew ultimately securing the starting role. Both showed promise, with Minshew's experience likely playing a key role in the decision.

Wide receiver D.J. Turner made significant impacts, particularly in the game against the Minnesota Vikings, showcasing his potential as a deep threat. And, he made some crucial catches to convert third downs against the Dallas Cowboys.

The defense, while not overly aggressive in the scheme, had moments of brilliance, particularly with Jack Jones making plays in the secondary. However, depth in the secondary was highlighted as an area of concern.

Special teams play was highlighted by Tyreik McAllister's 81-yard punt return for a touchdown against the 49ers, showing potential in the return game. He also had some great moments like a huge catch for a touchdown, but special teams is what likely won him the job on Friday.

Despite the winless record, there was an observed improvement in team energy and coaching compared to previous years, suggesting a cultural shift under new leadership. The games were more about evaluating player roles and roster spots than winning, with many starters playing limited snaps.

Now, all of this is great -- the preseason is over, but things are only about to get harder. The regular season is upon us, and the Los Angeles Chargers are waiting for the Raiders in Week 1. But first, the front office must do one of the hardest things in the business to do -- tell a player they have to find somewhere else to play.

Most coaches and general managers take that business approach, where they don't form connections with the players so it's easier to cut them.

Tom Telesco is showing that it's not just a business. He was seen in the tunnel afterward greeting every single player. And yes, you see people do this often, but I can't think of the last time I saw a GM do it.

Telesco cares about these guys, and he's showing that.
