Former Michigan Heisman Trophy winner is already suggesting the replacement head coach for Ryan Day at Ohio State

It is no secret that the pressure is on for Ryan Day and the Ohio State Buckeyes in 2024. With the roster the Buckeyes have, they are expected to get to the College Football Playoff and do damage.

A lot can happen between now and the end of the season with injuries or anything else, but the Buckeyes on paper are as good as any team in the college football landscape . With that team, expectations are at an all-time high too.

Ryan Day has lost to Michigan three times in a row and did not reach the College Football Playoff last year. If the Buckeyes were to fall short of those again this year, there would certainly be people calling for his job.

ESPN college football analyst Desmond Howard already has one replacement in mind if Day was to be let go after this season and he is already on the staff.

“They went out and hired Chip Kelly as the offensive coordinator,” said Howard on an airing of Get Up. “So, if things go irate I think they have someone that is behind Ryan Day, Chip Kelly can be the next coach too. I think Ryan Day is on the hot seat right now.

It would be tough to see that the Buckeyes would actually hand the program over to Kelly. Day hired him to be his offensive coordinator and he comes from UCLA, where they certainly were not anything special. Kelly has been a good playcaller at the college level and has seen some winning success, but the Buckeyes handing him the keys to the program is something I don’t really see happening. Kelly was not even Ohio State’s first choice, it was Bill O’Brien who was hired and then took the head coaching job at Boston College.

Ohio State has what should be considered a veteran roster with all they were able to bring back. The additions they made from the transfer portal were all proven editions headlined by safety Caleb Downs and running back Quinshon Judkins .

Day is 56-8 in his five seasons as the head coach but it is the eight losses and when they came that sting bad. Day and the Buckeyes have been nearly unbeatable in the regular season outside of the Michigan game, which will never go over well in Ohio.

Ohio State needs to live up to the hype in 2024, but it seems a bit too early to be taking guesses at a coaching replacement for a job that isn’t even open. If it goes Ohio State’s way, they will have no worries of replacing their coach.
