The dream practice squad player for the Lions just hit the market

This is one that we here at A to Z Detroit have been keeping an eye on for a while now. Chiefs running back Louis Rees-Zammit has been cut by the Chiefs on Tuesday and will hit the open market.

The Detroit Lions should absolutely be all over him. Here's why:

For starters, Rees-Zammit is from the UK, so he is an International Pathways Players. That means the Lions would get a special 17th spot on their practice squad for him. So they don't have to make any open spots on the 16-man squad.

The other thing is that this kid can fly. He's a former rugby player that is still learning the American football game, but you can see some real 4.43 speed and shiftiness that just needs time to be worked on and tuned to football.

That's not the big selling point here. The actual big selling point is that Rees-Zammit is also a kicker. You read that right. Rees-Zammit handled some of the kickoff duty for the Chiefs during the preseason and was actually playing that role against the Lions a couple weeks back.

While the Chiefs haven't had him try kicking field goals, that doesn't mean he can't do it. Goal kicking is a big part of rugby and Rees-Zammit was a goal kicker for the British and Irish Lions rugby team.

The Lions have their kicker in Jake Bates and he no doubt has the job and probably will for a long time. Here is a chance to have a guy spend a year working on his ability to kick field goals while on the practice squad and also have the ability to run some guys over as a kick returner or running back. Then he can be your backup kicker and still have a role with the team elsewhere.

The Lions have talked all summer about the value of guys being able to do more than one thing. Well, here's your guy. Plus with David Bada being out for the year, the Lions have that IPP practice squad spot wide open.
