Steelers' waiver wire targets following final roster cuts are headlined by Super Bowl champ at WR

With the 53-man roster deadline behind us, Pittsburgh has trimmed their 90-man roster to what the team will largely resemble come Week 1 against the Atlanta Falcons.

But emphasis needs to be placed on largely, because the 53 men who are currently on the roster, may look different than the 53 who are on the roster come noon on Wednesday.

That's when the waiver deadline occurs, with Pittsburgh projected to be active on the wire over the next 20 hours.

These two names make a lot of sense as potential additions:

    WR Kadarius Toney

Dec 10, 2023; Kansas City, Missouri, USA; Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Kadarius Toney (19) is introduced against the Buffalo Bills prior to a game at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.

A former first-round pick, we know Coach Tomlin has a fondness for athletes that may not have panned out, with names like Justin Gilbert coming to mind. Wanting to know more on Toney and why he could be of interest, I reached out to a friend on the Kansas City Chiefs beat ahead of Toney being cut, which was widely expected:

Kadarius Toney is on the outside looking in on the Kansas City Chiefs roster in what was once a bad wide receiver room, and is now looking much better. There are too many guys in that room that stay healthy and are more consistent, so he being cut could very much happen. If he does get cut, he’d still be a player teams may want to snag because he has championship pedigree, will play special teams, and is a dynamic player with the ball in his hands. The issue is getting the ball to stay in his hands.

    CB Shaun Wade

    Former Patriots CB Shaun Wade

    Eric Canha-USA TODAY Sports

To get a better understanding of the situation and to learn about Wade, I reached out to one of the best up-and-comers on the New England Patriots beat:

Shaun Wade has been the with the Patriots since being acquired from the Baltimore Ravens as a rookie in August 2021. He has been a solid depth piece in the room, having playing in 20 games with the Patriots. He finished with 26 tackles and one pass breakup, and can also help on special teams. - Sophie Weller, A to Z Sports New England

The Steelers are rail thin at the CB position. Wade's Big-10 roots (former OSU Buckeye) and size at over 6-1 and nearly 200 pounds, fit the mold of what Pittsburgh wants in their CBs.
