Cowboys' post-draft gem proves why team paid him a whole lot of money by making the roster

Unsurprisingly so, the Dallas Cowboys are no strangers to keeping undrafted rookies on their 53-man rosters. If the team has been among the most successful in the league when it comes to finding talent in the NFL Draft, it only makes sense for that to translate into acquiring rookie talent when it's over.

This year, it became clear the biggest candidate for such a trajectory out of the Cowboys' undrafted free agent class was Minnesota tight end Brevyn Spann-Ford.

At the end of the day, in the NFL world, it's always smart to follow the money: In April, the Cowboys signed Spann-Ford to a guaranteed salary of $225,000 with a $20,000 signing bonus on top of it. The $245,000 guaranteed money number was one of the highest around the NFL this year.

The sum was also similar to Hunter Luepke's in 2023, who also made the Cowboys roster as an undrafted rookie last year. Now, it's Spann-Ford who proves he was worth the big financial commitment by sneaking into the team's 53-man roster.

What Cowboys fans can expect from Brevyn Spann-Ford

The huge undrafted rookie stands at 6-foot-7 and is the second-tallest player on the team, trailing only offensive lineman Matt Waletzko and barely surpassing first-round rookie Tyler Guyton.

Naturally, Spann-Ford is a menace as a run blocker , something that is shown consistently on film in college and something he's flashed in camp and the preseason. There are some rough moments, as well, like Maxx Crosby tossing him aside in Week 2 of the preseason for a big play.

Spann-Ford has, however, addressed the biggest red flag he had coming out of college: The largest drop rate in PFF history. That hasn't been an issue early on in his NFL journey, at least not to that degree. While it's unlikely Spann-Ford will be Dak Prescott's go-to target, the coaching staff likely feels comfortable getting him on the field as a run blocking specialist who can also catch.

Expect him to be in the running for TE3 snaps versus John Stephens Jr. and I'd be surprised if he is inactive when the games start.
