Browns’ key offseason decision doesn’t work out, may have just helped another NFL team

One thing to monitor around the Cleveland Browns this past offseason was the quarterback position. The Browns had four quarterbacks on the roster who could very well step in and play if called upon.

Now, Cleveland is set with their three quarterbacks for the season and the one they are moving on from is Tyler Huntley. Huntley has been released as of Thursday morning, first reported by Mary Kay Cabot.

The Browns have all their chips in on Deshaun Watson being the guy for them and he will be backed up by Jameis Winston and second-year quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson.

It appears that Cleveland was trying to take the approach they did last year by stashing a quarterback and eventually trading him before the season. They did it with Joshua Dobbs last year and this year they fielded calls on the three quarterbacks behind Watson. In the end, it is Huntley who gets released.

The upside of Thompson-Robinson and his preseason performance allowed him to hold off Huntley from overtaking him as QB3 in Cleveland. When the Browns signed Huntley, it was immediately something to look at for his past with the Baltimore Ravens where he did have a Pro Bowl nod.

Huntley is still just 26 years old and has played in 20 career games with nine starts. Following waivers, Huntley will be one of the better quarterbacks available on the open market, perhaps even the best.

With Huntley, you have to take the good with the bad. He can run around and make some good plays, but he is going to make that bone-headed play every once in a while that sometimes results in a turnover . This preseason with Cleveland, Huntley threw three touchdowns to two interceptions and had just north of 300 passing yards total.

The offseason decision didn’t work out for the Browns but it is easy to see why they tried it. Cleveland very well could get him to their practice squad, but we’ll have to see if that happens.
