Brandon Aiyuk finally got the payday he has long since desired on Thursday.

The All-Pro wide receiver agreed to a four-year, $120 million extension with the San Francisco 49ers, bringing to an end a long and fractious contract saga.

Aiyuk had executed a 'hold-in', reporting to training camp but not taking part in any of the practices.

Shortly after news of the long-awaited breakthrough emerged, ESPN's Adam Schefter claimed in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that the hold-in had made no difference to the final numbers.

He wrote: "In the end, Brandon Aiyuk accepted the same deal that has been on the table since August. 12, per league sources. His hold-in did not alter any part of his new four-year, $120 million extension. He took the same deal that had been there in previous weeks."

Those claims were quickly rejected by Aiyuk's agent Ryan Williams, who quoted Schefter's post with an amusing response.

Wrote Williams: "That’s factually inaccurate but the check still cashes."

In the end, cashing that check and being able to return to the business of playing football for the 49ers is all Aiyuk will care about.

Aiyuk staying put and playing for a team that consistently puts him in the best position possible to succeed was always the outcome that made the most sense . That is what happened and, now the deal is finally done, neither Aiyuk nor the Niners will be overly concerned about the winner of a battle of wills that lasted the entire offseason.
