Chiefs announce a flurry of roster moves including waiving a player who they just claimed days ago

The Kansas City Chiefs are continuing to shuffle their 53-man roster and practice squad ahead of Week 1 of the 2024 NFL season.

As expected, t he Chiefs officially signed RB Samaje Perine to the 53-man roster . The move was reported days ago, but the team had to get him in the building to pass a physical before they could make it official. That all happened yesterday and the announcement today means that it'll appear on the daily NFL personnel notice.

The corresponding move, however, wasn't something expected at all. During the waiver claim period, the Chiefs claimed former 2023 sixth-round pick CB Eric Scott Jr. from the Dallas Cowboys , but his stay on the 53-man roster doesn't appear to be for long. He was waived from the 53-man roster to make room for Perine.

In addition to the moves on the 53-man roster, the Chiefs also made a trio of moves on the practice squad. They signed former seventh-round pick CB Nic Jones and former Patriots QB Bailey Zappe to the practice squad. In a corresponding move, the team released RB Emani Bailey from the practice squad. That leaves RB Keaontay Ingram as the only running back on the practice squad for Kansas City.

Why did the Chiefs waive CB Eric Scott Jr. days after claiming him?

This feels like a bit of a strategic move from Chiefs GM Brett Veach as opposed to something like a failed physical or a change of heart. Should CB Eric Scott Jr. clear waivers, which is highly likely seeing as the Chiefs were the only team to submit a waiver claim, it's reasonable to expect that he'd join the practice squad as well. There he'll have an opportunity to learn the playbook and get up to speed without taking up a 53-man roster spot. He could potentially be elevated to the 53-man roster down the line and become a key contributor on both special teams and the defense. It does leave the Chiefs a little short on CB numbers for Week 1 if Nazeeh Johnson and Josh Williams continue to deal with minor hamstring flare-ups.
