Ricky Pearsall is in a serious but stable condition, the San Francisco 49ers said after he was shot during an attempted armed robbery on Saturday.

Pearsall, the 49ers' rookie first-round draft pick, was walking on Geary Boulevard shortly after 3:30 p.m. PDT when the suspect, a 17-year-old from Tracy, CA, tried to rob him with a gun.

A physical altercation ensued, during which both Pearsall and the suspect were shot.

Police responded to the scene at approximately 3:37 p.m., with Pearsall and the suspect transferred to San Francisco General Hospital.

49ers general manager John Lynch was reported to be with wide receiver Pearsall at the hospital.

The 49ers put out a statement on the incident, which read: "San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Ricky Pearsall was the victim of an attempted robbery and shooting this afternoon.

"He sustained a bullet wound to his chest and is in serious but stable condition. We ask that you please respect his privacy at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with Ricky and the entire Pearsall family."

Having reported from the hospital, where San Francisco Police Chief William Scott, San Francisco mayor London Breed and District Attorney Brooke Jenkins held a press conference, NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco sounded an optimistic tone about Pearsall making a full recovery from his injuries.

Speaking on an Instagram Live video , Maiocco said one person he spoke to with knowledge of the situation said Pearsall had been "unbelievably lucky".

He added: "It’s a very delicate situation but, as bad as this is, I’m getting the indication that everybody is very optimistic about Ricky making a full recovery."

Breed told reporters: "This was a terrible and rare incident in Union Square, and our thoughts are with Ricky Pearsall and his family.

"He has a bright future, and I look forward to seeing him recover and get back on the field."

The 49ers selected Pearsall with the 31st overall pick after an impressive final season with Florida. He returned to practice this week having missed much of training camp with a shoulder injury. Pearsall was due to make his NFL debut a week from Monday when the 49ers host the New York Jets at Levi's Stadium in their regular-season opener.
