Ricky Pearsall has been released from hospital, the San Francisco 49ers confirmed on Sunday.

The 49ers' top selection in this year's draft suffered a gunshot wound through the chest on Saturday during an attempted armed robbery .

Pearsall was walking on Geary Boulevard near Union Square in San Francisco shortly after 3:30 p.m. PDT when the suspect, a 17-year-old from Tracy, CA, tried to rob him with a gun.

A physical altercation ensued, during which both Pearsall and the suspect were shot. They were then each transferred to Zuckerberg General Hospital in San Francisco after police responded to the scene.

Pearsall's condition was first described as "serious but stable" by the 49ers before it was then upgraded to fair condition on Sunday.

A 49ers statement released on Sunday then confirmed his release.

It read: "San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Ricky Pearsall was released from the hospital this afternoon as he continues to recover from a bullet wound to his chest."

"He and his family, along with the entire San Francisco 49ers organization, would like to thank the San Francisco Police Department, emergency medical services, doctors and staff at San Francisco General Hospital."

The 49ers selected Pearsall with the 31st overall pick in this year's draft after an impressive final season with Florida.

He returned to practice this week after missing most of training camp with a shoulder injury. Pearsall was scheduled to make his NFL debut a week from Monday when the 49ers host the New York Jets at Levi's Stadium in their regular-season opener. Despite his rapid recovery, his participation in that game would now appear to be unlikely.
