The LSU Tigers played an excellent game of football against the USC Trojans but came up just short in a 27-20 loss. It was the beginning of a new era in Tigers football after top 10 picks quarterback Jayden Daniels and wide receiver Malik Nabers departed for the National Football League.

All eyes were focused on the quarterbacks in the matchup with LSU's Garrett Nussmeier and USC's Miller Moss getting their first regular season starts, as both players had gotten their first starts in their team's respective bowl games.

Both quarterbacks played really well throughout the game, but Moss made more plays than Nussmeier did. The quarterbacks isn't the biggest takeaway.

Kyren Lacy was the breakout star Sunday night

The player that everyone should be talking about is LSU wide receiver Kyren Lacy . He transferred from Louisiana after the 2021 season and was buried on the depth chart behind Nabers and Brian Thomas Jr. who also went in the first round at 23rd overall.

The Tigers have a long lineage of talented wide receivers. Two of them went in the first round of last year's NFL Draft and the likes of Ja'Marr Chase, Justin Jefferson and Odell Beckham Jr. have also been selected in the first round recently.

Lacy caught seven passes on 10 targets for 94 yards and a touchdown. Lacy was explosive in his movements and attacked the ball in the air with gusto. His touchdown was excellent, as he displayed excellent body control in the air.

Lacy was buried on the LSU depth chart last season but still put up solid numbers. He caught 30 passes for 558 yards and seven touchdowns. Those numbers were still pretty good but it was a struggle to crack the lineup due to the talent ahead of him and some drop issues.

Pro Football Focus only charted him with three drops on 44 targets but it was a high rate of 9.1%, but when you are already fourth on the depth chart, that can be a major deterrent.

With a hole in the WR1 role for the Tigers, Lacy has stepped into it quickly in week one and will be a must-watch player for both college fantasy football and the NFL Draft.
