One big reason Oklahoma Sooners head coach Brent Venables isn't taking Houston lightly

The Oklahoma Sooners have an SEC—Big 12 matchup on Saturday, where they will be playing the Houston Cougars, a team that they’re not as familiar with as you would think. This is the early part of what is a brutal SEC schedule.

However, head coach Brent Venables is familiar with the Cougars head coach, Willow Fritz, who is looking to take over what looks to be a bad Houston program and bring them back to relevancy.

And, as we all know, Fritz is a guy who can very well do that. The Cougars lost last week to the UNLV Rebels, a team that could be vying for that last College Football Playoff spot at the end of the year. Is there a way the Cougars beat the Sooners? Yes, but, it’s not likely.

The Sooners are a great team and look the part. The Cougars do not, but that doesn’t mean they can’t win. And, head coach Brent Venables isn’t ruling it out either. When you listen to him talk about the Coogs, there is one variable that stands out. It’s Willie Fritz.

"Coach Fritz's teams are 10-0 the last two years in true road games. So he knows how to win on the road... His staff is known for being well-coached and extremely disciplined,” head coach Brent Venables said to the media recently.

The Sooners are coming off a dominant win over the Temple Owls, one of the worst FBS teams in the country. This game could be very similar to what we saw last week against them, but Houston will be prepared because that’s what Willie Fritz does.

The Cougars scored just seven points last week and gave up 27 at home. While I respect Venables being humble, I’m not sure there is much else to say about a potential upset here. It’s pretty obvious what’s going to happen.
