Georgia QB Carson Beck leaps back on to Heisman Trophy pace as he demolishes Tennessee Tech

Carson Beck entered the 2024 college football season as one of the major betting favorites to win the Heisman Trophy. After leading Georgia to another undefeated regular season, throwing nearly 4000 yards, and tallying nearly 30 total touchdown last year Beck looked primed for perhaps an even bigger 2024.

In Week 1 Beck performed well as Georgia destroyed the Clemson Tigers 34-3, but the entire team performed so strongly that he didn't have to do much. He completed nearly 70% of his passes and threw two touchdowns on 278 yards passing, but those aren't exactly "Heisman" caliber numbers. If Beck wanted to get back on historically necessary pace to win the most prestigious individual award in sports he was going to need to go off in Week 2. And he did exactly that.

Despite playing only three quarters (and a few extra minutes) Carson Beck tossed five touchdowns to five different receiving threats. Arian Smith, Dillon Bell, Dominic Lovett, Lawson Luckie, and Colbie Young all found the end zone on passes from Beck as Georgia demolished Tennessee Tech 48-3 on Saturday

Beck's five-touchdown performance tied a single game passing touchdown record for the Georgia Bulldogs. Aaron Murray, DJ Shockley, and legendary national champion Stetson Bennett had thrown for five touchdowns before. That should certainly help Beck's chances at the Heisman this year.

Historically, recent Heisman winners need to reach somewhere around 3700 passing yards, 45 total touchdowns, and more than eight yards per play. 9 of the last 12 QB winners of the Heisman Trophy eclipsed all of the aforementioned three thresholds.

Carson Beck isn't the dual threat like some recent winners like Jayden Daniels, Kyler Murray, Lamar Jackson, or Cam Newton, so he won't be able to lean on rushing production, but if he continues showing out as a prolific passer he should certainly be in the mix in December.
