Lions assistant coach makes list of best assistants under 40, another is oddly missing

The Detroit Lions were able to keep most of their coaching staff together this offseason and that's huge. What else is huge is that there's guys on this coaching staff that are getting some notice outside of the usual suspects like Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn.

The 33rd Team put out their ranking of the top 25 coaches under 40-years-old and one Lions coach made it.

The first thing you'll notice on this list is that Ben Johnson is not on it. That is weird considering that he's 38-years-old. That does demean this list a bit because he's someone that would probably be number one if he was on the list.

Still, that shouldn't mean that we have to not give props to assistant linebackers coach Shaun Dion Hamilton.

Hamilton is just 28-years-old and has had an interesting route to get to this point. He was a sixth-round pick by the Commanders in 2018 and played there for two years before signing with the Lions as a free agent in 2021. Hamilton got injured in camp in 2021, but the Lions brought him back in 2022.

You cold see on Hard Knocks that he was a real leader on the field and in the film room. While the Lions cut him at the cutdown, they offered him a coaching job and he took it. Since then he's shined and the Lions are looking at him as someone that could have a bigger role down the line.

One of the big examples of that is that the Lions sent Hamilton to coach in the Senior Bowl last year. Usually teams look at the game as chance for coaches to go out and get a little bit more responsibility and growth.

Someday this team will lose Aaron Glenn as their DC. Don't be surprised if you see Hamilton's name in that discussion. Don't be surprised if he starts getting interviews with other teams sooner than later as well.
