Deion Sanders gets slammed for abandoning key Colorado Buffaloes tradition to promote Shedeur Sanders

The Colorado Buffaloes suffered an embarrassing 28-10 loss in Week 2 against the Nebraska Cornhuskers. The Buffaloes' offense dealt with the same bad offensive line play as usual, and mistakes contributed to blown opportunities. However, as usual with the Deion Sanders era in Colorado, the fallout of a loss brings more information.

After Colorado's loss, Jake Shapiro of Denversports.com posted a scathing piece on Sanders' lack of leadership over the program. It's one thing to be critical, but the piece revealed that Sanders has abandoned key aspects of Colorado's program traditions since taking over last year. Coach Prime must know that embracing and promoting school traditions are necessary parts of the job.

Shapiro described that when playing at home and Shedeur Sanders scores a touchdown, Deion Sanders has directed the band not to play the school's fight song. Instead, the school blares his son's "Perfect Timing" song through the stadium.

A year later and the fight song doesn’t even play in the stadium after the quarterback throws a touchdown. Deion Sanders told the band they couldn’t play if his son Shedeur Sanders scores a touchdown so that the loudspeaker can play a recording of his son’s song “Perfect Timing.”

The analyst also added that Colorado doesn't know the school's fight song and the lack of fight within the program might be linked to a lack of identifying with the song's final five words, "fight."

Sanders’ team didn’t take the time to learn the 35-word fight song, in which the last five words are all the same—fight. We saw no fight when Colorado tried to defend a large lead against Stanford in 2023. And there was very little fight while the team lost seven of their last eight games.

One user who shared the post on social media added clarity that Colorado still plays the fight song after the PAT, but has played "Perfect Timing" after Shedeur's scores.

Colorado spokesperson Curtis Snyder denied the claims made, (H/T to Trey Wallace ). Here's clarity on Deion Sanders' role, and how Colorado handles scores by Shedeur Sanders.

For all the nonsense that has come out of the Deion Sanders era thus far, some of it is truly unbelievable and seems like a pile-on for someone who is easy to dislike. It's okay for a coach to do his own thing and try something new.

But Colorado has to win to get rid of things that fans and boosters like, and honestly, there's no real excuse to allow self-promotion for your kids on the team.

We've seen several reports of favoritism for Shedeur and Shilo Sanders, and while some of that might be more forgivable, it's not hard to see why this team plays like a fractured group and not a family.

Winning in college football takes relentless buy-in for something bigger than oneself. Deion Sanders has fallen short at creating a culture that embraces this, and it's costing him in the wins column.
