Commanders cut player after his bad game against Bucs and his replacement is a big question mark

Well, it didn't take long for the Washington Commanders to decide on kicker Cade York's future with the team. The team announced Monday that it released York after a bad performance against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Commanders are now onto their fifth different kicker since February.

"I think we'll have a good talk about that, see where we're at," Commanders head coach Dan Quinn told reporters when he was asked whether or not they'd bring in competition for York. "Let's look into what next week looks like and go from there. I think what I have seen is talent [and] this guy has an incredibly strong leg. That's why the decision to go for the one I think at the 37, it felt good from the distance standpoint, and I thought we need to give ourselves a spark. So when those go the other way, kind of like we were talking about going for a two-point or not and you miss them, it kind of goes.

"But I thought the kick out of bounds, the misses, man, like I said, there's a lot of lessons from tonight. Adam and I have not discussed that at all. We'll get into that as we get into the week... missing those chances, that hurt."

York missed field goal attempts of 47- and 56-yards and he also kicked a kick off out of bounds that gave the Bucs the ball at the 40-yard line. Tampa Bay finished off that drive with a field goal that extended its lead to 16-7 thanks to the mistake. He also looked really shaky on one of his two PAT attempts.

"I think it just really goes to show we have really high standards," Quinn told reporters on Monday. "... I think it does speak to, if it's not right, you don't sit pat. You keep attacking and you keep finding ways to go compete, to do it, and we will get there. Yeah, I'm disappointed that it didn't go like we had hoped it would, but at the same time, we owe it to everybody that's part of the organization to keep digging and keep finding the right answers and get to the best fit for us. And so that's what we'll do."

Per NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, the Commanders plan to sign Austin Seibert. The quick move makes sense considering they'd have to quickly fill the new void on the roster. He's attempted just 27 field goals since he played for the Browns in 2019 and he's made just 20 of them, good for just 74% of his makes. He's played for three teams over that span: the Cincinnati Bengals, Detroit Lions, and New York Jets. He made 86.2% of field goal attempts and 85.7% of PAT attempts during his lone year as a full-time kicker in 2019.

We'll see how it works out, but the Seibert signing is definitely a wait-and-see type of move. The Commanders could easily find themselves right back in this position, sooner or later.
