Following their opening loss to the Dallas Cowboys, the Cleveland Browns have been in the spotlight quite a bit this week . They are there again after signing a player away from another team.

With injuries to the linebacker unit, the Browns have opted to sign linebacker Khaleke Hudson off of the New Orleans Saints practice squad. The move was first reported by NFL Network’s Mika Garafolo.

One route to adding depth in the season is signing a player away from another team’s practice squad. When a team does it, that player must go to the active roster of the team he joins. Cleveland will have to make a roster move to add Hudson to the team.

Hudson was a fifth-round pick by the Washington Commanders in the 2020 NFL Draft and had been with the Saints since he signed there in April. Hudson did suit up for the Saints in Week 1 as a practice squad elevation. Hudson has 12 starts in 59 games played during his NFL career after being drafted out of Michigan. The 6-foot, 220-pound linebacker has 108 tackles and a sack to his name while in the league.

Linebackers Mohamoud Diabate and Tony Fields II both provide depth for the linebacker unit in Cleveland but were hurt in the Week 1 game against Dallas. Diabate is dealing with a hip injury and Fields has an ankle injury. Following the game in Week 1, head coach Kevin Stefanski said both players along with tight end David Njoku are “week to week”.

Another roster move for Cleveland early in the season that was needed due to a couple of injuries. Expect Hudson to play for the Browns on Sunday when they travel to Florida to take on the 0-1 Jacksonville Jaguars .
