There weren’t many Notre Dame football fans who thought that their week three matchup against the Purdue Boilermakers was going to be an overly difficult one this offseason. Now following their awful loss to Northern Illinois 16-14 last weekend , no game feels safe. If anything this is going to be a good temperature check on the resolve, perseverance and growth of this football team.

Some soul searching needs to happen for the Irish this week. On defense, it just comes down to having a bounce back performance following a lackluster outing against Northern Illinois. Al Golden and his defensive squad have mostly been stellar since the beginning of the 2023 season. It’s more than likely just an outlier performance last week.

This week is going to be about the offense. Can Notre Dame find some answers about the quarterback position? Can they find an identity? Fans want to see if offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock can soften the pessimism.

    Notre Dame’s 2024 schedule:

    • Sept. 7 – Northern Illinois (16-14 L)
    • Sept. 14 – Purdue
    • Sept. 21 – Miami (OH)
    • Sept. 28 – Louisville
    • Oct. 5 – Bye
    • Oct. 12 – Stanford
    • Oct. 19 – at Georgia Tech
    • Oct. 26 – Navy (neutral)
    • Nov. 2 – Bye
    • Nov. 9 – Florida State
    • Nov. 16 – Virginia
    • Nov. 23 – Army (neutral)
    • Nov. 30 – at USC

The biggest key for Notre Dame is to get the passing game going this week. Whether Riley Leonard is able to play, or if Steve Angeli gets his opportunity behind center, the quarterback position is going to be under the microscope. We know the running game will be able to get going, but finding an ability to create explosive plays in the passing game will be the only thing that can help Irish fans find comfort moving forward.

Defensively, you have the clear advantage on paper. The defensive line is a spot that should be able to dominate against Purdue. You need defensive tackles Howard Cross III and Rylie Mills to have big games. Notre Dame is going to be tested on the perimeter, and their athletes must be ready to compete and make big plays.
