Bears' backup plan at key spot just got ruined in Week 2 thanks to latest injury news

The Chicago Bears made a lot of interesting offensive personnel decisions in the season opening comeback win against the Tennessee Titans.

The least talked about one was the rotation between Nate Davis and Ryan Bates at right guard protecting rookie quarterback Caleb Williams.

Ideally, you'd like to have an established starting five in front of your rookie quarterback, but the rotation in Week 1 was by designed according to head coach Matt Eberflus.

"That was the plan," Eberflus said after Week 1. "Both guys were dealing with health issues during training camp. We wanted to make sure they could finish the game. So we were going two and two there."

The rotation worked out considering the two only allowed one combined pressure (credited to Davis) on 33 combined pass blocking snaps. While Eberflus wanted to keep the competition going between the two at the position, he's going to be forced to make a decision going into Week 2.

Following Friday's practice, the team released the final injury report going into the weekend and ruled out Bates with shoulder and elbow injuries. That means Davis is the unquestioned starter in Week 2 despite playing 12 pass blocking snaps last week and not getting much work during the offseason .

Eberflus did note that Davis had a " really consistent " day on Friday and there doesn't seem to be a plan to rotate anyone else in, whether that's Matt Pryor or anyone else.

"It's just about consistency and he had a really consistent practice this week," Eberflus told reporters . "He was really on it, in terms of run and pass, his responsibilities and technique. I thought he really improved this week."

Here's what the rest of the injury report looked like:

The biggest takeaway is the latest update on two of the Bears top weapons on offense. Both Keenan Allen (heel) and rookie Rome Odunze (knee) will be listed as questionable for Sunday's game. Eberflus noted earlier in the week that Odunze will be day-to-day after an MRI revealed he suffered an MCL sprain in Week 1. He returned to practice as a limited participant on Friday after missing the first two days .

"I felt pretty solid. I felt pretty solid," Odunze said in the locker room . Of course I was being a little precautionary just because, again, knee injury. But I felt good, I really did. Just getting back into the flow of things, catching up to speed with Caleb and the offense...

"I think tomorrow will be a good measure of recovery and how my knee feels in that moment, so that’ll be the telling sign. But I want to be out there on that field any way possible. So I’m gonna try and make that happen."

Allen, however, has been dealing with a heel injury for two weeks now but was able to play all four quarters last weekend. The bad news is, Allen did not participate in practice all week with the staff wanting him to rest the heel during the week. Eberflus said after practice that he'll take it "all the way up to the game" on Sunday night to see if Odunze and Allen could go.

As for some good news, second-year defensive tackle Zacch Pickens will not have an injury designation after missing the season opener with a groin injury. His return will be a big boost for the limited interior depth on the defensive line.

The Bears also ruled out fullback Khari Blasingame with hand/knee injuries and listed defensive end DeMarcus Walker (foot) as questionable. Walker was tied for a team-high five pressures against the Titans in Week 1.
