Kent State head coach Kenni Burns reportedly made a baffling decision at halftime of his team's game against the Tennessee Vols on Saturday night.

According to longtime Vols reporter Jimmy Hyams, Tennessee, which held a 65-0 lead at halftime, offered to shorten the quarters or institute the use of a running clock in the second half, but Kent State declined the offer.

Maybe Burns was trying to send a message to his team. If so, his team seemed to receive the message in the second half, holding Tennessee's third-string offense to just three points in the third quarter.

Even without the running clock, the third quarter went by fairly quickly thanks to Tennessee slowing down its offense and eating up clock with easy completions and running plays.

Still, it's surprising that Burns didn't take Tennessee up on the offer to shorten the game. The last thing anyone wants is to suffer an injury in a non-competitive blowout game.

As a former player I know the KSU coached did what he did to spare his team further embarrassment. Of either option was taken the media would have announced every chance they got and that would be adding salt to the wound, or in this case wounds. The smaller schools need these games because the payout is huge and helps fund all the colleges sports programs. The ass beating KSU should be applauded by the players whose sports need that money to survive. NIL has really hurt colleges with smaller programs but it’s here to stay and everyone needs to figure out how to use it to their benefit. I’m a KSU alum and these wounds will heal and the Golden Flashes will be back.
