Steelers officially place the ball in Justin Fields' court following latest roster decision

The Pittsburgh Steelers are on to Week 2 of the season with the Denver Broncos on tap.

And while Russell Wilson has had this date marked on his calendar since the schedule was announced, it seemed doubtful he would play in a return to Denver.

That is now officially following the team's release of the pregame inactive report:

Russell Wilson Inactive For Week 2

The writing was on the wall for Wilson as early as Tuesday when HC Mike Tomlin announced that the team was preparing for Justin Fields to be the starting QB on Sunday, followed by a week of limited activity and questionable designation heading into Sunday.

The move ensures more than the fact that Wilson won't start on Sunday, it ensures that Justin Fileds now has multiple chances to prove why he shouldn't be unseated as the Steelers starting QB.

On Sunday morning, Ian Rapoport of NFL Media wrote that while Russell Wilson wouldn't necessarily be benched, don't rule out Mike Tomlin sticking with Fields if things on the grass look greener:

Justin Fields, who did not turn the ball over in an 18-10 win over the Falcons, will start again in Denver, sources say. The former Bears first-round pick, who impressed in camp while Russell Wilson was sidelined with a calf injury, must follow a similar script: Execute the game plan, take care of the football and let one of the NFL's best defenses perform.

If that happens, don't be surprised if Tomlin continues to have Fields start, sources say, even if Wilson has recovered from his aggravated calf injury. It would not necessarily be a benching, but more of a continuation of what is working under center.
