Arch Manning isn’t even the starting quarterback for top-ranked Texas and he’s winning SEC weekly awards.

The budding star with the recognizable last name proved Saturday night against UTSA he’s more than just some quarterback with famous genes. Manning accounted for five touchdowns in a blowout win and was named the SEC co-freshman of the week, the league office announced Monday.

It’s the third straight week a Longhorn player has captured one of the SEC’s weekly awards. Manning certainly deserved it, same as tackle Cam Williams, quarterback Quinn Ewers and center Jake Majors did after the first two games.

Manning was also named to the Davey O'Brien Award "Great 8" quarterbacks lists for his performance against the Roadrunners.

Manning is likely to get the start this week against Louisiana-Monroe (2-0) as Ewers is sidelined with a strained abdominal injury. Coach Steve Sarkisian is expected to give an update on Ewers’ status during his Monday news conference.

“The coaches are on me here, just trying to prepare and stay ready each week,” Manning said Saturday night. “So when my number's called, I can go in there and execute, and that's what I tried to do tonight. Obviously, there’s a lot to work on and build on, but that’s what I try to do, and help us win games.”

Manning threw four touchdown passes and ran for another from 67 yards out in a stunning display coming off the bench.

“It felt good getting hit,” Manning said. “I haven’t been hit since high school. It felt good. I love everything about it. DKR was rocking tonight. The fans are great. I'm just glad I got to get out there, and I hope Quinn’s OK and hope we can keep winning.”
