The Kansas City Chiefs are working through their options at the running back position.

Reports came in early on Monday morning that RB Isiah Pacheco suffered a fractured fibula. Chiefs HC Andy Reid didn't verbally confirm that to be the injury suffered by Pacheco, but he did indicate that Pacheco suffered an injury that will keep him out for some time.

"As far as (Isiah) Pacheco goes, we will go with the guys that we have here now. (Chiefs GM Brett) Veach is kind of going through his list and looking at people, and we'll just see where that goes. But we're blessed to have some good people here."

Pacheco touched the ball 25 times on Sunday. Reid was hesitant to commit when asked whether the players on the roster could carry that type of workload

"I would tell you, I have confidence in them," Reid said. "I just don't -- I haven't experienced it with them."

Reid did not give a specific timetable for Pacheco's return, but he knows that recovery from this type of injury will take some time.

"I know it will be this week," Reid said. "And it'll probably be more than that, obviously, but it's going to take a little bit of time there."

Who will replace RB Isiah Pacheco for the Chiefs?

While Chiefs GM Brett Veach will certainly do his due diligence on the best available players at running back , the team does have two players on the 53-man roster who can fill the role, Carson Steele and Samaje Perine. Based on Reid's comments, it would sound like the rookie, Steele, will be tasked with carrying the load in Kansas City, at least as things get started.

"Yeah, well, he's going to have to step it up there and in that role," Reid said of Steele. "But I think he likes to be challenged, and I think this will be a good challenge for him. He's obviously got to keep the ball high and tight. He had the fumble yesterday, and he hasn't been he doesn't have a history of that, so it's he's got to make sure he learns from that."

The Chiefs also have RBs Keaontay Ingram and Emani Bailey on the practice squad. One of those players will likely be promoted to the 53-man roster for Kansas City should they opt against adding another player in free agency.

What about RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire's availability?

Edwards-Helaire, who is on the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform list, he's part of the puzzle that Kansas City now has to figure out.

"That's part of the equation," Reid admitted. "So, we've got to just kind of figure all of that out and see how all that fits in. But we know he's around. So, we just don't have him available here for a couple more weeks."

Edwards-Helaire will not be eligible to return until Week 5 against the New Orleans Saints.
