Steelers' recent first-rounder sees his starting job go down the drain after Mike Tomlin's latest decision

There is no faster way to get in a head coach's doghouse than by committing penalties.

And if you are already teetering on the edge of being benched for a rookie like Broderick Jones was, Sunday against the Denver Broncos was a recipe for disaster for Jones.

That was confirmed on Tuesday by Mike Tomlin with his latest depth chart release and comments:

    Broderick Jones Benched

"It was more reflective of what Troy was doing," Mike Tomlin said when asked about the decision to name Troy Fautanu the starting RT. "Troy had been lighting it up. I don't talk a lot during the preseason, particularly about rookies because it doesn't help me and it doesn't help them. But based on my actions in terms of putting him in the lineup, I'm sure you have an understanding of what I was looking at in team development."

Fautanu was a surprise starter on Sunday but what was even more head-scratching was the decision to rotate Fautanu and Jones, which ended up being disastrous after a series that saw Jones commit three penalties in six snaps , allocating his benching for the rest of the game, and potentially longer despite what Coach T said:

"Man, I'm gonna give Broderick an opportunity to rebound," said Tomlin. "He's a talented young player. I'm sure he suffered some disappointment in terms of Troy [Fautanu] starting. It's a natural thing, but he's gotta move past it and I gotta give him an opportunity to move past it as a leader. And so, we'll get into this week, we'll let participation be our guide and the quality of participation for both guys be our guide in terms of how we divvy up reps this week. It's a new week."

The best case for Jones' return to the starting lineup isn't at RT or rotating with Troy Fautanu. It's supplanting Dan Moore Jr. at left tackle, whether it's injury or poor play.

But Moore has been solid through two weeks and shows no signs of slowing down, leaving the future in question for Jones and where he fits as a Pittsburgh Steeler.
