Sooners legend admits he's conflicted about who to root for in Oklahoma vs Tennessee matchup because of Josh Heupel

College football Hall of Famer Roy Williams is conflicted when it comes to who to root for in this weekend's matchup between the Tennessee Vols and the Oklahoma Sooners.

Williams is an Oklahoma legend who played for the Sooners from 1999 to 2001. He was the Big 12 defensive player of the year (among a host of other accolades) in 2001 and the No. 8 overall selection in the 2002 NFL Draft.

It seems obvious that Williams should be pulling for the Sooners this weekend.

The Vols, however, are coached by Josh Heupel, who was teammates with Williams for two seasons at Oklahoma (including the 2000 season when the Sooners won the national championship).

And Williams admitted this week during an appearance on The Family Business that he'll be rooting (in some capacity) for Heupel for this weekend.

"That's my guy, I love Josh," said Williams. "I'm rooting for him -- I'm not even going to lie. I am most definitely rooting for Josh. I don't want him to win. But at the same time, I do want him to win...I don't want Sooner nation mad at me, but Josh is my boy. I suited up with him, we were in the trenches together.

"It's tough. It is tough. Because I know Josh wants this game. He wants this game. And I know his team is going to do everything they can to get this game for Coach Heupel."

If that doesn't tell you what kind of impact that Heupel left behind at Oklahoma, I don't know what will.

Every time we've heard a former Oklahoma player talk about Heupel, it's been nothing but praise, respect, and appreciation. And the comments about Heupel from former Sooners players are usually accompanied by an unforced nostalgic smile.

Almost everyone in Norman on Saturday night, minus the Tennessee fans who make the 12-hour trek from Knoxville, will be rooting for the Sooners. But I have a feeling there will be a few folks in OU gear who know Heupel on a personal level that will have a smile on their face if Heupel is on the field celebrating a massive win for the Vols.

Did anyone out there lose a commemorative football? I found one. If you can describe it, I’ll get it back to you.
