Ohio State head coach Ryan Day gives uncertain injury update on defense's best player

The Ohio State Buckeyes were without Tyleik Williams in Week 4 against Marshall, which led to a letdown performance from a defense that is doing well but not perfect. It's far from time to panic, as the Buckeyes have what it takes to not only beat Michigan State in East Lansing but also cover a 24.5-point spread.

Ryan Day Gives Tyleik Williams Injury Update

The Buckeyes lost the time of possession battle in the first half against Marshall because the defense couldn't get off the field. Marshall had a whopping 46 offensive plays, whereas Ohio State's offense was chunking its way into the endzone without a few snaps. That latter part isn't a concern.

However, Williams' absence was felt. Even though it's good to see depth options get some run, the pass-rush was stymied far too often. Marshall also exposed Ohio State a bit with their quick passes and scrambling quarterback combination.

In his recent press conference, Day said that Williams is "day-to-day" with an undisclosed injury. He opted against expanding on the injury or its location, but it doesn't sound severe enough to require more than rest.

Day also added that he saw "some good moments" from the defensive tackle rotation. It's hard to fully agree with him, as Kayden McDonald was the only player who really stood out to me. Tywone Malone Jr. and Hero Kanu graded better for PFF, but run defense was more heavily weighed into that.

The Buckeyes can still execute their keys to the game against Michigan State without Williams, but their top 2025 NFL Draft prospect is the engine that makes the unit go up a higher level. We'll continue to monitor Williams' status in the coming days.
