The Pittsburgh Steelers are in the best spot you could ask for after three weeks.
Undefeated, atop the division with a two-game lead, and coming off their best offensive outing of the year against a strong Chargers defense.
So why would you change anything, when everything is firing on all cylinders?
Well, Coach Tomlin has his reasons:
Mike Tomlin won't commit to Justin Fields as starting QB
"Because there's no need," said Coach Tomlin when asked why he hasn't named Justin Fields the starting QB. "I explained to you the variables of the week. It has not changed. He's going to walk in this building with that mindset [starting QB] tomorrow, and so really, there's no need to. Sometimes in this business, man, there's a myriad of complex decisions that need to be made. "I've learned to make 'em when it's appropriate and it's not necessary as we sit here right now. When Russ gets to an appropriate point of health and we have a decision to make, I'll make it and I'll announce it and I'll be really transparent about it, but until then, I don't care how many ways you guys ask me, I have no intentions of making the decision that's unnecessary at this juncture."
The only reason that Tomlin can continue to play this card, is because of Russell Wilson's availability, or lack thereof. Expected to be limited early in the week, Tomlin didn't close the door on a return to full capacity from Russ come Thursday or Friday:
No matter how healthy Russ is, inserting him into the lineup when your team is 3-0 and quickly rallying around a signal caller who put the offense on his back to win a game seems like a recipe for disaster, especially when listening to some of his coaches and teammates:
We could have finality in this decision as soon as Friday. If Wilson is a full participant heading into Saturday, the injury disguise that Tomlin has been using for the QB situation could end.
Regardless, Pittsburgh is headed to take on an Indianapolis Colts team that finally won last weekend, as they look to gain and Pittsburgh looks to maintain.
