The years leading up to Texas’ first SEC game were filled with questions over whether the Longhorns would be ready.

Now that it’s here, not only is Texas (4-0, 0-0 SEC) the No. 1-ranked team in the nation, but UT is a 38.5-point favorite against Mississippi State (1-3, 0-1).

Saturday has been three-plus years in the making. News first broke about Texas’ desire to move to the SEC from the Big 12 first broke in July 2021.

For all the buildup, the Longhorns will start this new era against a team that’s lost its starting quarterback for the season. Mississippi State announced last week that Blake Shapen, a former Baylor transfer, was lost for the season.

Still, Texas coach Steve Sarkisian had nothing but praise for MSU coach Jeff Lebby, who sprang from the Art Briles coaching tree and uses and quick-trigger offense known for its wide splits along the offensive line.

“Ton of respect for Coach Lebby. He knows Texas football well from his time in the Big 12,” Sarkisian said. “They've got really good wideouts to where they're a dangerous team that way.

“You know, I think back to our first year (at Texas), you know, where they’re fighting, scratching and clawing, and they’re dangerous that way,” he added. “And I think that our players respect the heck out of them because of that.”
