Bears are aiming to maximize the strengths of their RBs and it could lead to more looks for someone other than D'Andre Swift

By now, everyone knows that the run game for the Chicago Bears has been one of the most disappointing offensive units in the entire league.

The Bears rank 31st in yards per carry through three games, with only the Las Vegas Raiders having a worst average among the 32 teams, and continue to squander perfect opportunities to get the run game going.

D'Andre Swift, the first free agent who signed with a new team this offseason, has struggled to get anything going since joining the Bears and it's not entirely his fault. Therefore, going into Week 4, the Bears are aiming to make some changes.

Anyone who has watched the Bears' offense this season knows that the team's running backs have not been maximized to the best of their abilities. Swift has struggled while handling the bulk of the carries, especially on runs inside the tackles. Khalil Herbert only has eight carries through three games, and Roschon Johnson just played his first game with an offensive snap in Week 3.

Heading into this weekend's game against the Los Angeles Rams, head coach Matt Eberflus hinted that the team will be looking to get all of those three players in positions where they can succeed for efficiently together.

"I think we have three unique guys that have skillsets that we can really utilize as we get going in the course of this year and it's important that we do that," he explained . "I was real happy for Roschon being able to run the ball effectively and catch the ball out of the backfield in two minute and third downs, Swift made some really nice plays in the passing game too, and Herbert's really making plays. I think we have a unique skillset of each individual guy and we got to do a really good job of using those guys."

So far, offensive coordinator Shane Waldron hasn't been able to do that. The offense has been force feeding the ball to Swift for minimal success and getting the other two backs more involved can help everyone out in a big way.

That starts with taking carries away from Swift on the ground. Behind the Bears struggling offensive line, Swift just doesn't have the skillset needed to adapt and pick up the tough yards on the ground.

"Really it's pressing the hole, you know, really creating that for the offensive line, not coming out too fast, and really pressing the hole," Eberflus said on Wednesday when asked what areas of the game Swift has been struggling with. "And then making your cuts off of there and pressing the line of scrimmage."

When it comes to the main carries up the middle, that role seems to be better suited for a hard-nosed style of runner like Johnson until the offensive line can create better holes to run through. After rushing for 30 yards on eight carries last weekend, Eberflus noted he was impressed with how the second-year back was denting the pile forward.

Based on what he showed last week after finally getting an opportunity on offense, even ESPN's Jeremy Fowler wrote on Wednesday that he thinks Johnson's usage will only go up in terms of the number of carries he gets on Sunday.

As for work out of the backfield, Swift has caught six of his nine targets this season turning that into 46 yards, compared to 68 yards on 37 rushing attempts. Meanwhile, Herbert's shiftiness and speed offers a great change of pace to mix things up from the other two backs, but you have to actually mix him in.

It seems like the Bears' coaching staff is beginning to realize this and we'll see if they actually change things up this time around.
