Bills defense could be getting a massive boost in the middle of brutal road trip

After Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott commented on the health status of Terrel Bernard and Taron Johnson earlier in the week, providing a positive update that both of them are hopefully avoiding IR, Buffalo got one of them back on the practice field on Thursday.

Both Bernard and Johnson have already been ruled out for Sunday Night Football against the Baltimore Ravens, but Bernard got back on the practice field since suffering his pectoral strain in Week 2 against the Dolphins.

It's awesome seeing the leader of the defense back out there. There's no denying that what the Bills defense has done through three weeks is impressive – they've allowed the 8th-fewest yards per game, have given up only four touchdowns on the season and only two in the last two games, and are holding opponents to the second-fewest passing yards per play through three weeks.

They're doing all this without Bernard, Johnson, and Matt Milano, who was lost in the preseason. It's truly been remarkable coaching by McDermott and defensive coordinator Bobby Babich to have the next guys on the depth chart ready to play meaningful football, and even more impressive to get this kind of production and consistency from guys that weren't highly touted.

Bernard is on the right path to returning sooner or later, which will be a huge boost to an already electric defense. Following Buffalo's Week 4 game at Baltimore, they're travel to Houston for Week 5, before heading to the New York Jets for Monday Night Football in Week 6. This is arguably the hardest stretch of the season for the Bills, and getting Bernard back at some point in the middle of it would be a welcome sight.
