Georgia QB Carson Beck receives highest compliments from Alabama coach ahead of huge Week 5 SEC rivalry game

Coming into the 2024 college football season Georgia's star QB Carson Beck was considered by many to be the best quarterback in the nation. Not only for college football purposes, but perhaps also as a future number one overall 2025 NFL Draft pick in.

However, in today's world of overreactions based on every single game there were some questioning Beck after his lackluster performance against Kentucky two short weeks ago. Would he be able to take on Alabama and win? Based on what we've been hearing from Alabama coaches themselves this week it sounds like they're still more than impressed by Beck.

Kalen DeBoer was complimentary of Beck when asked about him this week in media availability, but was Alabama's defensive coordinator Kane Wommack who gave Beck the highest compliments. Wommack called Beck "as good as it comes in college football right now" among other things in an interview this week, talking about how tough it is game planning for him.

"I think their quarterback, Carson Beck, is as good as it comes in college football right now. Incredibly efficient with his decision-making. Does not take many sacks. Rarely turns the ball over. Takes care of the football. I think he does a really tremendous job in the intermediate throwing game. He has great accuracy. Really quick release, great decision-maker. Just so impressed by him the more I watch and I’ve probably watched every game from the last couple of years here."

Dating back to the beginning of last season Carson Beck has now thrown 31 touchdowns to just six interceptions, posting nearly 10 adjusted yards per pass attempt, and completing over 70% of his passes. It's hard to find a game where he struggled from beginning to end in his entire Georgia body of work.

Although, Kentucky's tough defensive front did give Beck quite a bit of problems two weeks ago. The elite defensive tackle and edge rusher group pressured Beck nearly a dozen times throughout the game, hitting him four times. That may not sound like a ton of pressure, but Georgia' offensive line typically dominates and protects with ease. That pressure did enough to limit Beck all game long to just 160 passing yards.

Even so, coach Wommack couldn't stop talking up Carson Beck. He did address they need to make him uncomfortable, but there's clearly not a throw Beck can't make:

"They do a really good job, if he has time, and he hits most of those things because he’s incredibly accurate at different portions of the field — the short game, the intermediate game, and certainly he can make the long throws down the field. This guy’s a complete quarterback. He’s really as good as I’ve seen in the last couple of years. I think, for us, we have to be mindful of making him uncomfortable, but you want to make sure you’re not sacrificing things from a coverage perspective in order to get that done."

Beck's ability to layer the ball accurately to his receivers at every level downfield throughout a game sets him apart from many college quarterbacks who are all or nothing type players. Many dump the ball off on quick short passes or launch it downfield off play action.

Beck has been back at it again winning at every level so far. In fact he has three touchdowns on passes of 20+ yards, two on middle range 10-19 yard passes, and then two more on short range passes. He's just an incredibly tough distributor to try and stop.

Hopefully Wommack and Alabama's defensive backs are left still struggling to find ways to stop Beck after this week's SEC rivalry game. If Alabama's studs up front in Lebbeus Overton, Tim Keenan, and Quandarrius Robinson can bring pressure like Kentucky that might be more than Beck can handle well, but those players surprisingly don't look as good as Kentucky's front so far this season.
