Ref from Miami's win over Virginia Tech delivers second controversial walk-off decision in favor of Hurricanes

Man.  When the Miami Hurricanes and referee Jerry Magallanes and his crew get together on a football field, really, REALLY weird stuff happens.  Friday night at Hard Rock Stadium was another chapter in that bizarre history.

The Miami Hurricanes defeated the Virginia Tech Hokies 38-34, rallying from a 24-17 halftime deficit to secure their first ACC win of the season.

But a back-and-forth game will be forgotten for all except the last 3 seconds by most fans.  That's because of the wacky, bizarre, and controversial ending that left fans across the country shaking their heads in disbelief.

Miami's prayer on a Hail Mary review was answered

With 3 seconds left, Virginia Tech quarterback Kyron Drones uncorked a Hail Mary from the Miami 41-yard line.  A mass of humanity jumped up for the ball, which swallowed it up.  The group fell to the ground.  Shortly after landing, the ball appeared to shift around among players before a Miami defender ran out of the pile with the ball.  After a discussion, the official said Virginia Tech's Da'Quan Felton had secured it for a touchdown.

After a lengthy review where ESPN rules expert Matt Austin said he thought it was moving and that the catch wasn't completed through the ground, Magallanes reversed the ruling on the field and called it incomplete.  That was a curious decision, as it wasn't easy to see the ball for the first tenth of a second or two after the players fell to the ground.

Magallanes was the referee in the 2015 Duke-Miami lateral game

Fans will surely remember the Duke-Miami game from Halloween night back in 2015.  After Duke took a 27-24 lead with 6 seconds left, Miami took the kickoff and managed to keep it alive in time to get the ball into Corn Elder's hands after 8 laterals.  Elder weaved through Duke players with a convoy of blockers to complete a 91-yard kickoff return.

However, the play was originally flagged for an illegal block, but Magallanes then said the play would be reviewed.  After a nine-minute review, the flag was ultimately picked up and no player was ruled down, making the play legal and the touchdown valid.

That play was controversial for a number of reasons.  Mark Walton appeared to perhaps have been down just before releasing the ball, although it was close, even on replay.  Picking up a flag after review is also typically a no-no, as penalties aren't supposed to be reviewed.  Lastly, a player without a helmet ran onto the field for Miami well before Elder crossed the goal line. As a result, the ACC suspended Magallanes and his crew .  However, the game result stood.

Nine years, later, and the Canes are walking off the field winners of an insane and controversial win, with Magallanes and his crew filing off the field among jubilant Miami players.  This decision felt more defensible than before despite the substantial outcry on social media, as the original call of touchdown seemed to be very sketchy when made based on the apparent lack of control of the ball by Felton and the rest of the players after landing on the ground.

Still, it's always a party when the Canes and Magallanes are in action together.  And it's one that the Canes have enjoyed in the most memorable of fashions.
