Former first-round pick will have to wait another week before making his Steelers debut

The Pittsburgh Steelers had to make a hard decision with one of their top prospects this week, placing Cory Trice Jr. on the injured reserve following his hamstring injury.

In doing so, CB James Pierre returned to the active roster, and former first-round pick C.J. Henderson was signed to the practice squad .

And while it was anticipated he could be called up, Henderson won’t be playing against the Indianapolis Colts:

Steelers Elevate, RB Aaron Shampklin, CB Thomas Graham

The Steelers elevated defensive back Thomas Graham Jr. and running back Aaron Shampklin from the practice squad to the Active/Inactive Roster for Sunday's game against the Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium. Henderson was selected ninth overall out of Florida by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 2020 NFL Draft.

It hasn't been smooth sailing for Henderson through the early portion of his career thus far, as he was traded to the Carolina Panthers quickly into his tenure in Jacksonville before hitting the market this offseason.

Regardless, he has first-round pedigree, experience, and size. Those are all things that Steelers HC Mike Tomlin values highly.

Henderson has played in 49 career games, starting 33 of them and recording 172 tackles, 16 pass breakups and 3 interceptions.

For Shampklin, the elevation comes after RB Jaylen Warren was officially ruled out on Friday. He will be the third back behind Najee Harris and Cordarrelle Patterson. Look for him to primarily be used as a special teamer.
