AP voters, coaches have mixed views over whether Texas or Alabama should be No. 1 in college football

Sportswriters moved Texas to No. 1 in the Associated Press Top 25 poll two weeks ago. The coaches followed suit on Sunday, moving the Longhorns to No. 1.

Now, the writers aren’t so sure.

Alabama jumped to the top spot in the updated AP Top 25 poll after a thrilling 41-34 win over Georgia. Meanwhile, Texas had an uneven 35-13 win over Mississippi State. Both teams are undefeated, and it’s likely both teams battle for the top spot each week throughout the regular season.

Last week, the Longhorns (4-0, 1-0 SEC) had 44 first-place votes in the AP poll. This week, the Crimson Tide had 40. Texas is idle this week and will get ready to face No. 19 Oklahoma in the Red River rivalry game on Oct. 12

At least the Longhorns moved up to No. 1 in Sunday’s updated US LBM Coaches Poll, the longtime poll conducted by the American Football Coaches Association.

The coaches have Texas, Alabama and Ohio State ranked first, second and third, respectively. Georgia was No. 1 in the coaches’ poll last week and fell to No. 5 after the wild loss in Tuscaloosa.

Texas does not play Alabama during the regular season but will play Georgia on Oct. 19.

As the calendar turns to October this week, it’s worth remembering what Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said the Monday after UT was named No. 1 two weeks ago.

“I think now more than ever, and I don’t want to take anything away from the polls because of the 12-team playoff, it really doesn’t matter,” Sarkisian said on Sept. 16. “We say it all the time as a team, it’s not really what other people think of us. It’s about what we do, and we’ve got to perform, and we’ve got to prepare to perform.”

Center Jake Majors followed his coach’s lead and said, “It doesn't really matter until January 20. I want to be number one then. Right now, it’s all about how you attack this week. You can’t win the national championship in week four.”
