Mike Tomlin's fatal flaw shows itself on atrocious final drive during Steelers' loss vs. Colts

It looked like the Pittsburgh Steelers would be in for a rough day against the Indianapolis Colts following the first half.

Mustering only three points and showing no signs of life via the air or ground, the team turned things around in the second half, managing 21 points, with Justin Fields putting the team on his back.

But after a final drive that went completely array in multiple areas, the team fell 27-24, with no one to blame but themselves.

    Steelers Comeback Comes up Short

Right when it looked like the Steelers were going to complete their comeback, three atrocities occurred within a matter of seconds. First, rookie center Zach Frazier snapped the ball before Justin Fields was ready, putting the team behind the sticks at 2nd and 22.

A few plays later, Fields had to dump the ball off to Najee Harris, who inside of two minutes with only one timeout, had one clear get job: get out of bounds.

Well, he didn't and then instead of giving his guys a moment of pause as opposed to panic, HC Mike Tomlin decided not to use that final timeout ahead of the fourth down play that resulted in a Justin Fields incompletion and ended the game.

When asked why, Coach T gave the following explanation:

"I just wanted to hold it [final timeout] in my hip pocket," Coach Tomlin said after the game. "You know, sometimes working at a pace is an advantage for an offense, because it doesn't give the defense an opportunity to get specialized people in the game, ponder calls, get a perfect call. You know, I was working at pace, and I just want to keep it in my hip pocket."

Well, I'm all for saving, but unlike the cash that burns a hole in your pocket, if you don't use your timeouts, they don't carry over in some sort of savings account.

And sure that was one of the few blunders on a day that saw fumbles, poor challenge calls fourth down attempts (also by Coach Tomlin) and more than a few defensive letdowns, but why not get your team together and come up with a clear plan for what could be, and ended up being the final play of the game?

Guess Coach T was saving the timeout for a rainy day.

Going for it on 4th down on the colts side of the field was about as dumb and arrogant as I’ve ever watched. Deserved to lose.
