New England Patriots kicker Joey Slye was a shining spot in Sunday's game against the San Francisco 49ers.

In the first half, Slye provided the Patriots with the only points. And with that, he also made history.

Slye now holds the record for the longest field goal in franchise history after nailing a 63-yard field goal. The record was previously held by Stephen Gostkowski at 62-yards.

But his celebration was short lived. On Monday when he arrived back at Gillette Stadium, a message was waiting for him from the NFL.

The kicker posted a photo of the note left on his locker, saying he has been selected for a random drug test by the league. And Slye specifically highlighted one word from that.

    "'Random,'" he simply wrote.

He's not wrong. The NFL always has a way of selecting players who excel the day prior for these 'random' tests.

But regardless, it was a cool moment for the kicker to break the record despite the loss.

Head coach Jerod Mayo also took a moment on Monday morning to praise Slye for his efforts this season.

"I was so happy for him yesterday, hitting a 63-yard field goal," Mayo said. "This is a guy who has great energy in the locker room. The guys love him, and he's performing well for us."

Throughout the summer, Slye was battling hard with second-year kicker Chad Ryland. During the early days, things seemed fairly even, but towards the end, it was clear that Slye was in the lead. And as a result, the team ultimately waived Ryland.

Slye is eight-for-nine this season, only missing one from the 40-49 range. He is 2-for-2 from over 50 yards.

So he's earned the trust of the team.

And based on his answers after the loss, he is the definition of a team player.

“There was some individual success there, which obviously I’m happy for for myself,” he told reporters after the game. “But for team success, I’m trying to do the best for the team to give them an opportunity to win. So, if it’s not coming out to a win at the end of the day, my individual success really isn’t that important to me.”
