Saints may trade for Davante Adams sooner than later, according to a report from NFL insider

The New Orleans Saints are clearly open to adding a playmaker on their offense before this year's trade deadline. Former All-Pro WR Davante Adams has a history with Derek Carr, and New Orleans is a potential spot for him to land over the next couple of weeks.

Saints remain a contender for Davante Adams

Jordan Schultz reports that the Raiders' preference  is to get a Davante Adams trade done “sooner rather than later." That being said, they also won't rush into making a trade just to finish it.

They prefer to not take on any money remaining on his contract, but that will almost certainly decrease the compensation they get in return.

A trade to the Saints would require Vegas to pay some of Adams' deal for this season. They simply do not have enough cap space right now (just over $2.6 million). Other moves could be made to increase that amount, but it's unlikely that the Raiders could get off scotch-free if they trade him to New Orleans.

The New York Jets have the cap space necessary to get the deal done without Vegas paying some of his contract. They're considered the other favorite to land Adams.

Many sources around the league believe that Vegas will receive a third-round pick for the receiver in the end, but they continue seeking a second-round pick + more for him right now.

As Dianna reported last week, the sense around the league is Las Vegas will probably end up with a third-rounder for Adams, who “is open to a few teams but prefers the Jets and Saints.” After losing to Minnesota 23-17, New York desperately needs both wins and another threat across Garrett Wilson (22 targets on Sunday). The Saints haven't backed down yet, though. They're perceived as the most aggressive suitor for an Adams trade so far.

... But it's been the New Orleans Saints who have been the most aggressive, while other teams, including the Buffalo Bills and Pittsburgh Steelers, have closely monitored the situation and stayed in touch. The Jets remain very much in the mix, as well.

Timeline for a Davante Adams trade

How soon could New Orleans, New York, or a wildcard team land the wideout?

NFL insider Dianna Russini, among others, think that the Raiders would like to have him dealt this week. That is, if they get the right offer.

Since last week I’ve had plenty of conversations about where Adams might be traded. But the more pressing question right now: When will he land? As far as the Raiders and the receiver are concerned, they want him to have a new home some time in the next 48 hours. -- Dianna Russini

Will they receive the compensation that they want most in an Adams deal? That remains to be seen.

Regardless, the Saints' offense could make a massive addition before they play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 6.
