The Oklahoma Sooners and Texas Longhorns have been squaring off every year since 1929 in one of college football's best rivalries. The Red River Rivalry has delivered some of the most memorable moments of every season. This weekend will mark the 120th overall meeting between the two bitter rivals.

However, despite this rich history, the Sooners have rarely faced a Texas Longhorns team ranked number one in the country, like the Longhorns are this week.

The last time Oklahoma squared off against a top-ranked Texas team was back in 1984, in the infamous 15-15 tie. Funnily enough, former Texas head coach Mack Brown was coaching for the Sooners.

This will be the first time the Sooners have played the number one team in the regular season since the "Game of the Century" against the Nebraska Cornhuskers in 2000.

Does this bode well for either team? Despite the rich traditions of these two teams, they've played in a matchup where one of them was ranked #1 just 11 times in their history.

The top-ranked team has lost just twice . Both times, it was the Sooners losing to Texas (1963, 2008) and in both games, the Longhorns were ranked in the top five.

Texas has been #1 in four of these matchups, once in the aforementioned 1984 debacle, once in 1946, and then twice in the 1960s. They have yet to lose as the top-ranked team, aside from the 1984 tie (which still enrages plenty of Oklahoma fans).

This isn't a great sign for the Sooners, although I'm sure plenty will find amusement in the fact that the Longhorns haven't been #1 in this matchup for 40 years.

However, this is a deep, hate-filled rivalry game. Records, rankings, and previous games don't matter as soon as these two teams take the field.
